On the way to the city centre, there is the Fukuoka Castle site with only some castle gates remaining.

Surrounding the site is a long-stretching moat, where sometimes drunks fall.
Apart from the drunks (they will be picked up anyway), the moat is filled with lotus.

I love the sight of the moat in summer when the lotuses flourish. Despite being located in one of the busiest areas of Fukuoka, the serenity of the scenery will make you temporally forget hard-pressed, hectic everyday life. When it is relatively cool, lower than 30 Celsius by my standard, I will sit in front of the flowers for nearly an hour for a brief meditation (though my husband’s scolding “Where did you waste all that time!!” will wait for me afterwards).
